Medical Student Electives
Through its affiliation with Weill Medical College of Cornell University, Hospital for Special Surgery offers clinical electives for students in their fourth year of medical school. Electives are available in the following areas:
- Clinical Aspects of Connective Tissue Disease (Rheumatology)
- Foot Service
- General Orthopaedics: Comprehensive Training in the Diagnosis, Treatment and Prevention of Adult and/or Pediatric Musculoskeletal Disorders
- Hand Surgery
- Limb Lengthening
- Metabolic Bone Disease and Orthopaedic Oncology
- Musculoskeletal Pathology
- Orthopaedic Biometrics and Biomaterial Research
- Orthopaedic Trauma Service
- Pediatric Orthopaedics Service
- Receptor Biology in Human Phagocytes
- The Role of T-B Lymphocyte Interaction in Autoimmune Disease
- Skeletal Radiology
- Spinal Deformities
- Sports Medicine Service
- Surgical Arthritis

Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible to take clinical electives at Hospital for Special Surgery:
- You must be an MD candidate in good standing and must be currently enrolled in a medical school that has been accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME);
- You must have completed all the required clerkships at your home school and be a senior student at the time you plan to take electives at Hospital for Special Surgery;
- You must be covered by liability and malpractice insurance through your home school;
- You must have personal health insurance through your home school or submit other documentation of personally held coverage with your application;
- You must submit a completed application (pdf);
- You must complete the Health Clearance Form (pdf) and return with your application materials;
- You must submit a current photo (jpeg format only) to the Academic Training Department (academictraining@hss.edu). The subject of the email must read “Application Picture, (Your Name)” and be addressed to the Academic Coordinator.
Hospital for Special Surgery does not offer clinical electives to students enrolled in osteopathic programs.
