Stavros S. Niarchos – Thomas P. Sculco, MD International Orthopaedic Fellowship

The Stavros S. Niarchos Foundation, an international philanthropic organization, supports charitable activities in four primary areas: arts and culture, education, health and medicine and social welfare. The Foundation makes grants to nonprofit organizations throughout the world. In addition, the Foundation maintains a major commitment to supporting programs in Greece through the guidance of a locally based advisory committee. The Foundation hopes to foster exchange and collaboration among recipient institutions by supporting a broad range of organizations across its program areas in locations around the world.

In an effort to improve healthcare in Greece and throughout the world, the Stavros S. Niarchos – Thomas P. Sculco, MD International Orthopaedic Fellowship is designed to provide Greek national Orthopaedic Surgeons the unique opportunity to participate in a one year fellowship program at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

The fellowship will be offered to an orthopaedic surgeon from Greece who has completed their residency program.  The fellowship will continue for one year and combine research and clinical observation*.  Under the supervision of Thomas P. Sculco, MD, Surgeon-in-Chief, the fellow will work in the Adult Reconstruction/Joint Replacement Service and conduct research.  They will have the opportunity to learn about evaluating patients, attend grand rounds and other medical education programs and observe in the operating room when Dr. Sculco is in surgery. The fellow may also be present at surgical procedures and ambulatory clinics performed by other orthopaedic faculty.

The Niarchos fellow may elect to pursue clinical research projects or basic science depending upon their interest and will be expected to complete scientific and scholarly work, present at a peer review forum and submit one manuscript prior to finishing their fellowship year. The fellow will attend orthopaedic teaching conferences which are presented daily. At Hospital for Special Surgery, over 5,000 primary and revision joint replacements are performed yearly, and over 500 are performed by Dr. Sculco. Additionally, there are many clinical and basic science projects under the supervision of Dr. Sculco and the arthroplasty faculty for the fellow who can assume a major role in project formulation, data collection and preparation of the manuscript.

*The opportunity for clinical participation is dependent upon procurement of the appropriate visa.  To be considered for clinical privileges as a fellow, candidates are required to have passed the United States Medical Licensing Exams (USMLEs) and/or to have obtained ECFMG certification.  To confirm specific requirements please contact Amy Broffman at broffmana@hss.edu or 212-774-2302.

The applications will be reviewed by a committee, and selection is based on merit.  The dates of the fellowship are August 1, 2009 – July 31, 2010. Deadline for application and supporting document submission is January 1, 2009.

Three letters of reference are to be sent directly to Hospital for Special Surgery by the referring individuals.  One letter must be from the candidate’s program/fellowship director/chairman from their accredited Greek medical institution stating that the candidate has completed their program in good standing.  The two additional letters must be from persons in the Greek academic community. 

The review committee reserves the right to schedule an interview (in-person or phone) when deemed appropriate.

The program recipient will receive an annual salary in the amount of $50,000 (including fringe) along with a $12,000 housing allowance and $1,500 for transportation.
