Hospital for Special Surgery Ranked No. 2 in Orthopedics and No. 3 in Rheumatology by U.S.News & World Report

Ranked above all other Northeast hospitals in its specialties; Only NYC hospital in top 10 for Orthopedics

NEW YORK—July 7, 2006

Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) has been ranked as second in the nation in orthopedics and third in rheumatology by U.S.News & World Report in their 2006 America’s Best Hospitals survey. For the 16th consecutive year, HSS has ranked above all other hospitals in the Northeast in orthopedics and rheumatology. It is the only New York metropolitan area hospital ranked in the top ten nationwide in orthopedics. HSS also ranked 23rd in neurology and neurosurgery.

HSS President and CEO John R. Reynolds said HSS and its staff are pleased once again to receive this important recognition among the top U.S. medical centers and to be recognized annually for our specialized care.

With more than 5,000 hospitals evaluated nationwide, rankings are based on reputation and such measures of quality as patient volumes and mortality rates as well as nursing care and technology services.

Surgeons at HSS perform nearly 18,000 orthopedic surgeries per year. Its Sports Medicine Center physicians are associated with major professional sports teams including the New York Mets, New York Giants, New York Knicks, New York Liberty Basketball, the Association of Tennis Professionals and the U.S. Rowing Team. Additionally, the hospital has established a number of specialty centers including innovative centers for Osteoporosis Prevention and Women’s Sports Medicine.
