14th Annual
Sports Medicine for the Young Athlete
Saturday, February 25, 2012
Co-sponsored by Hospital for Special Surgery Office of Continuing Medical Education and New York Chapter 3, American Academy of Pediatrics
OVERVIEW More than 30 million children participate in sports in the U.S., and every year over 3.5 million receive medical treatment for a variety of sports-related injures and conditions. Adolescents who are involved in sports are under pressure to compete and specialize. As a result, there is a need for the practitioners who treat them to be aware of the pressures on athletes and how to manage the resulting sports-related medical issues. This course will explore a variety of topics such as headaches, the risks of sports specialization, shoulder and elbow injuries, bone health and return to play which can help prepare adolescents to participate in sports and practitioners to treat common sports injuries.
OBJECTIVESAt the conclusion of the course, the participant should be able to:
- Recognize the specific issues of the adolescent athlete
- Better recognize and treat orthopaedic issues in the adolescent athlete
- Identify the physical and mental risks associated with sports specialization
- Understand and employ conservative treatments for hip injuries in young athletes
- Implement available treatments for headaches and bone health in order to return players to the game as appropriate
- Perform proper hip and back examinations on young athletes in their practice
- Evaluate and provide appropriate care for post-operative complications such as chronic effusions, draining wounds and minimizing blood loss.
