Research Description

Tissue Engineering of Ligaments/Chondroprotection/Molecular interactions between mechanical load and inflammatory cytokines in degradation of cartilage matrix in OA/RA.

In collaboration with Jo Hannafin, MD, PhD, we are determining the effects of mechanical strain and cytokines on cell proliferation and matrix turnover in ligaments to determine the optimal conditions for tissue engineering a ligament. In collaboration with Peter Torzilli, PhD, and Chisa Hidaka, MD, we are exploring the molecular mechanisms involved in cartilage matrix degradation by mechanical load and inflammatory cytokines in OA/RA . In collaboration with Peter Torzilli, PhD, we are exploring ways to modify the cartilage surface so that it becomes more resistant to breakdown by MMPs and mechanical shear.
